History

From augmentation to articulation.

Five decades of intellectual history. Four eras. One continuous lineage from the founding work of cybernetics and intelligence augmentation to the contemporary articulation of Hi-Centric AI as a working discipline.

Four eras of foundation.

1971 — 1989

The Augmentation Era

Engelbart's Augmentation Research Center; the Xerox PARC tradition; the rise of human-computer interaction as a field. Computation comes to be understood as something built around human work rather than something that replaces it.

The Symbiosis Era

HCI matures into an empirical discipline. Distributed cognition, situated action, the network era. Computation becomes integrated into human practice across medicine, finance, science, and law — without yet being framed as a discipline of intelligence augmentation.

The Frontier Era

Deep learning emerges and quickly dominates. Two parallel research programs form: autonomous AI pursuing model performance and human-centered AI pursuing principled design. The intellectual ground for Hi-Centric AI matures even as the discipline itself remains unarticulated.

The Articulation

Hi-Centric AI is articulated as a discipline of methodology, philosophy, and applied practice — extending the older lineage into the contemporary moment. The discipline is offered as something to be inherited and extended.
